Peace in the Middle of a Storm
My room mate is currently listening to Pope Francis
address the nation on TV via EWTN (Friday, March 27, 2020). The passage selected was Matthew 8:23-27;
Jesus calms the storm. The message focused
on faith. Jesus and his disciples had
entered a boat to cross the Sea of Galilee.
While at sea in the darkness, a great tempest (storm) appeared threatening
the lives of the disciples who struggled to save themselves. Jesus was asleep in the stern of the boat, the
first to sink into the overpowering waves.
The disciples woke Jesus up and cried in fear, “Don’t you care about us? We are perishing.” Jesus gets up and calms the storm and turns
to his disciples, “Why are you afraid?
Have you no faith?” The passage
concludes with the disciples marveling that the sea and the waves obeyed Jesus. Pope Francis used the passage to encourage the
people; we are in “a storm,” in darkness and while in the middle of the storm,
we can find peace; keep our faith in Jesus who is in the storm with us. Although this passage was read many times in
a variety of worships services I attended, and the messages heard during those
times were very similar to life’s situations, the message given by Pope Francis had the most most impact as we
all face the Corona Virus Pandemic (COVID-19) on a global scale. I strongly believe, God is wanting our
attention.
Earlier this week I posted a song on Facebook; one I
wrote back in the 1990’s based on Psalm 139.
I have yet to see my song, message posted on my wall for all my friends
to hear; to listen. Yes, I may be “sheltered,”
staying at home, working from home and limited in places I wish to go, to eat,
to fellowship but this does not stop nor prevent me from trusting God who
created my being, my person, my body.
Yes, I need to be careful to wash my hands, wear gloves or a face mask when
needed; God would expect me to “my part.”
The difference is that my trust and faith is in God, through Jesus
Christ. God knows me inside and out and he
is with me, in this boat. I do not need
to fear and panic; I have peace and I am calm in the middle of “this storm” we
are currently in. Here are two songs; the first I just heard on-line and posted on Facebook and second I wrote. May you find peace and calm; Jesus is asleep
in the boat with you.
